A 13-year-old school student died and three other children sustained serious injuries after a dilapidated compound wall of St Paul’s Church at Kalewadi fell on them on Saturday morning.
The children were playing cricket at the playground near the compound wall when the incident took place. The deceased has been identified as Swapnil Kolge. All the injured boys, Chetan Tayade, Atharva Mali and Ritesh Nakhate are residents of Vijaynagar area of Kalewadi.
According to the police, after playing for some time, Swapnil and his three friends sat near the compound wall of St Paul’s Church. Suddenly, the compound wall caved in, burying them under the debris.
Assistant inspector AB Londhe from Sangvi police station said, “After the incident, local residents rushed to the spot. They rescued Swapnil and four friends from the debris and took them to a private hospital. Swapnil was proclaimed dead on arrival. The other children have been admitted to a Thergaon-based private hospital. They are stated to be out of danger.”
According to Londhe, the compound wall may have weakened due to the rain. “Swapnil studied in standard VII. His father works with a private firm at Bhosari. We have registered a case of accidental death,” Londhe added.
