The Koyna Hydroelectric Project authorities have prepared a plan to use 25 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of extra water allocated to Maharashtra by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT) to increase the power generation capacity of the project by 500 MW by 2016.
If the plan is approved, 80 MW of additional power will be generated at the Koyna dam unit and 400 MW will be generated in the Humbarali unit. As per the plan, third lake tapping will be done at Koyna dam in 2016 after which water will be directed to the dam’s underground powerhouse to produce 80 MW of power.
The KWDT has enabled the state to direct 25 TMC of additional water to the west of Koyna dam. Koyna dam is located in Deshmukhwadi in Patan taluka of Satara district, and the power generation units of Koyna Hydro Power Project are located in the west at Pophali, Alore and Tambatwadi in Chiplun taluka.
The dam has a storage capacity of 105.25 TMC. Of the total storage capacity, 67.50 TMC of water is used for power generation while 32 TMC is used for irrigation.
Presently, the project generates 2,000 MW of power. The central government had formed the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal in 1969 to settle water sharing issues of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Considering 75% availability of the 2,060 TMC water in Krishna Valley, the tribunal had allocated 560 TMC water to Maharashtra, 700 TMC to Karnataka and 900 TMC to Andhra Pradesh.
Later, after the tribunal was reconstituted under the chairmanship of former justice Brijesh Kumar, it reviewed the situation and allocated 666 TMC water to Maharashtra, 911 TMC to Karnataka and 1,001 TMC to Andhra Pradesh.
