Otis Opens LEED(R) Gold Standard Plant in Chongqing, China
New Energy-Efficient Facility Reinforces Otis' Continued Investment in China and Overall Global Growth Strategy
FARMINGTON, Conn., Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On September 21, Otis Elevator Company( http://www.otisworldwide.com/a1-home.html ), a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), announced the opening of a new LEED Gold standard plant in Chongqing, a major city located in southwest China. The new facility, which has the capacity to manufacture over 15,000 elevator units annually, strengthens Otis' extensive investment throughout China, a market that now accounts for half of all global elevator sales. As the second factory opening for Xizi Otis, one of four brands under Otis China, this investment will extend its growing national network and further enhance customer support.

The factory employs highly efficient production processes, reducing energy usage and advancing environmental sustainability. Under the factory's LEED standards, 90 percent of the waste generated during the construction phase of the factory was recycled and carbon emissions were significantly reduced through a rigorous monitoring system and adoption of environmentally sensitive materials.
"We are pleased to be opening this, our newest factory in China, here in Chongqing. China's continued potential for urbanization and infrastructure development present great opportunities for the global elevator and escalator industry. As the industry leader, today's event and our investment in this factory, signify our commitment to providing safe, green, and reliable products and services to our customers in China and Asia for many years to come," said Pedro Baranda, Otis President.
This latest factory opening in China demonstrates Otis' customer focused manufacturing strategy to go where the market is and a pattern of continued growth and capital investments in key markets around the globe. Otis plans to open three additional factories in Florence, South Carolina, Bangalore, India, and Sao Paolo, Brazil in 2013. These new factories will enable Otis to establish a stronger presence in local markets to better serve their customers.
The facility in Chongqing also reinforces Otis' The Way to Green(TM) program, a major global environmental commitment launched in February 2011 that spans all aspects of its business, ranging from manufacturing processes to company-wide operations.
