Amid protest by railway workers over various issues, including restoration of the old pension scheme, the government has given a glimpse of good news to employees of the public transporter.
The Ministry of Railways has proposed to raise various allowances for its workers. It has planned to increase Risk and Hardship allowance from Rs 2700 per month (R3H2 categorization) to Rs 6000 (R2H2) for Mate and Keymen. The central ministry has also planned to hike Risk and Hardship allowance from Rs 2700 pm, (R3H2) to Rs 4100 (R3H1) for Trackmen preforming Patrolling duty, a report by Zee Business said.
The Indian Railways has also proposed to increase the Level Crossing Gate Allowance from Rs 1000 (R3H3) to Rs 4100 (R3H1) for Gateman, working in Special & ‘A’ Class Gates. The ministry also proposed to include all P.Way Artisans & their helper in the R&H Matrix for payment with a pay of Rs 2700 (R3H2) as for Trackmen, the report said.
The new pay proposal by Railways, if approved, will cost an additional Rs 222 crore per annum to the railways. All India Railway Men's Federation General Secretary Shiv Gopal Mishra told ZeeBiz.Com that the proposal has been sent to the finance ministry but a decision has not been taken yet. Once approved, the move will benefit thousands of these workers.
Unhappy with the pay hike and pension scheme, employees of state government as well as of the Central government have been protesting for a long time.
Railway workers will do no more than the minimum required by the rules of their contract from December 11 and refuse all overtime in a call for 'work-to-rule' to protest the Railway Ministry's refusal to meet their demands, a statement from the All India Railway Men's Federation said last week.
The unions are scheduled to meet the Railway Board on December 5 over demands to revoke the National Pension Scheme, increase in running allowance and incentives and improvement of working and living conditions.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had faced protests by railway employees in Lucknow on November 16 over issues of restoring the old pension scheme and regularisation of the service of the apprentices.
