While young Puneites are attaining economic prosperity, their marriages seem to be in doldrums in view of the large number of divorce petitions being filed in the family court.

A whopping 2,039 couples separated permanently during 2011 in Pune. Of them, 713 couples sought divorce mutually and the rest fought bitter legal battles. The counsellors say the divorces are increasing because of frequent egos clashes and the couples could not understand each others’ views over many
petty issues.

A senior counsellor at the family court said, “We try our best to mediate between the couple for six months so that they can reunite in the interest of their families and children. But many times, we observe that when the couple comes to us, they have already decided to get separated. Such couples are in no mood to listen or wait for six months to separate.’’

Of the 1,326 couples who did not separate mutually and fought a legal battle for divorce in 2011, most petitioners were economically independent married women. IT professionals constituted a major part of these separating couples. Married couples in their thirties are preferring divorce due to lack of joint family structure, the counsellor said.

The reasons for divorce were also diverse. The counsellors say, “Every year, there are some unusual cases like change in sexual orientations of the spouses which create storm in the family. In one case, a woman sought divorce after a few years of happy marriage alleging her husband’s sexual preference had changed.’’

Speaking about the rise in the number of divorce cases from 1,985 in 2010, the counsellor said, “The jurisdiction of the family court extends up to Pune Municipal Corporation limit. Every year, the number of couples getting married is increasing. Hence, there is nothing new in rising divorce numbers.’’

There should be a separation of one year before any couple files a divorce petition. Once they file the petition in the family court, the counsellor tries to mediate between the couple for six months and if the couple still insists on getting a divorce, the petition is considered by the family court.
