The Tibetans have voiced their protest at the decision taken by the Censor Board to censor the Free Tibet part of the song Sada Haq from the film Rockstar.
Tibetans stated that their sentiments were “hurt” at a press conference held on Thursday at the Press Club. It was addressed by Tenzin Tsundue, Tibetan writer from Dharamsala and Dorjee Tseten, national director of National Students for a Free Tibet-India. “This conference is to protest the censoring. Free Tibet supporters are disheartened this is happening at a time when there is brutal operation against us in China. This was our chance to reach out to a larger audience through a two-second clip but that too was censored,” said Tseten.
Tibetans have asked supporters of Free Tibet movement to show solidarity and go to the movie halls with Tibetan flags. “We discussed this with CEO of Censor Board Pankaja Thakur. She said that they just highlighted it and the director voluntarily blurred it out,” said Tsundue.
Organisers claimed that requests to know why the scene was censored were not answered by Thakur. “She questioned the relevance of the scene. We wanted to know if it was self-censorship or Chinese pressure, but she didn’t answer. Censoring does not support the larger cause of India’s support for Free Tibet,” said Tsundue.
Tibetans said that they have failed to seek an appointment with Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali.
Both Pankaja Thakur and RP Singh were unavailable to DNA for comment.
But Ali, who bowed down to pressure from the Censor Board and blurred the Free Tibet banners in the song sequence of the film, insisted that he was not taking a political or social stand.
