More than 2 lakh aspirants seeking an entry into the Indian Institutes of Management will be waiting for midnight on Tuesday. A minute past midnight the results of the common admission test (CAT) will be released on www.catiim.in.

With not many technical glit-ches this year, students are expecting the CAT website to function properly on the D-day. But with pictures being uploaded for the first time on the scorecards, the file will be five times heavier than the earlier ones.

“Every year we try to have a server back-up, but the website crashes on the result day. This is the first time that the scorecards will have candidates’ pictures. These will make the files five times heavier than the scorecards that were uploaded in the previous years. We have taken all precautions to avoid any crash. We will have to wait and watch now,” said Himanshu Rai, convenor of CAT 2010.

He added, “It is difficult to estimate the traffic at any given time. Some students tend to check their scores repeatedly just to reaffirm their results. Some do it out of happiness. This can increase the load on the server, and result in a crash. But we have done everything to avoid it.”

The pictures will authenticate the scorecards, he claimed. “During the group discussions and personal interviews, the pictures will also be available on the database. We have a biometric system, but that can go wrong sometimes if the finger prints are unclear,” added Rai.

Iqbal Khan, who appeared for CAT 2010, said, “As photographs file will be heavy, students might face problems. But, in the end, everybody will get their results. So we are not worried about the website’s speed. I am worried about the cut-off scores of the IIMs though.”

Two weeks ago, there were rumours of a results’ ‘leak’ among students. Some candidates claimed they could see their 2010 results on the CAT 2009 results’ website. The convenor questioned the integrity of the students who had seen their scores before the official results were out.
