Giving women's safety their top priority during the Kumbh Mela, which will be held between July 14 and September 25, the Nashik police have taken several measures. Authorities will deploy scores of policewomen round the clock to keep vigil and assist women pilgrims in the coming days.

City police commissioner S Jaggannathan said, "Women security and safety is one of our major focus areas. We are taking concentrated efforts to ensure the same."

Apart from the general security that will see about 15,000 cops and allied security forces manning the city during the mega event, the Nashik police have plans to ensure that women pilgrims feel safe during Kumbh. Keeping this in mind, the number of women constables at every police station is being increased by five – in addition to the present staff.

Presently, Nashik police have a Nirbhaya Mobile – an all women police squad which keeps vigil and assists women 24X7. Every Nirbhaya squad has one officer and 4 personnel and a driver. The squad is equipped to deal with issues and crimes related to women.

"During the Kumbh Mela, more five such Nirbhaya squads will be pressed into service. Each squad will be given resources including a vehicle, wireless communication, arms, etc. Women in need of help or distress can contact the Nirbhaya squad which is a mobile squad and hence continuously on city vigil," said Jagannathan.

Women who need help or have to seek assistance can contact either the control room on 100 or dial 9762200200 or 9762100100 which are dedicated to Nirbhaya squad.

Apart from Nirbhaya mobile, the police will open more helplines with women personnel so that victims can feel comfortable sharing their details.

Among the concerns during the Kumbh Mela would be safety of women in the city and particularly at ghats during the Shashi snan – holy dip. The Nashik Municipal Corporation has made arrangements for temporary shades and enclosures for changing rooms for women. Such places will be properly guarded, the police said.

Another concern is that of chain-snatching. "We are working closely with the Thane city police who have had breakthroughs with chain-snatching crimes. Special teams have been sent to Mumbai, Pune and Thane to gather data and expertise regarding such crimes and the Nashik police are also likely to get success shortly," Jagannathan said.

The top officer added, "We are taking concentrated efforts to ensure women safety and security during the Kumbh Mela and will also conduct special sessions of all police personnel men and women, and sensitise them in dealing with women visiting the city and their safety matters."
