Woman on morning walk hurt while fighting attackers on bike

A 32-year-old woman, who was out on a morning walk at Marine Drive on Friday, was attacked by two unknown men on bike.

One of the men attacked her with a sharp object when she fought them while they were trying to snatch her mobile phone. They couldn’t succeed.

According to the police, Meherjaan Mohamed Lamberaj, a resident of Tardeo who works with a private firm, was listening to music and her earphones were connected to her mobile phone.

When she was near Air India junction, the two men on a red motorbike approached and the man sitting pillion got off and tried to snatch the phone which was in her track jacket.

Lamberaj resisted by holding on to her phone. In a bid to force her to let go of her phone, the man attacked with a sharp object. She raised an alarm which scared the man who sped away with his accomplice.

Some college students heard the her screams. When they rushed to her, they found her hand bleeding. They rushed her to Bombay Hospital.

Lamberaj told the police that the man who was riding the bike was wearing a helmet. Since, it was little dark she could not see their faces properly.

The Marine Drive police are in the process of checking if any CCTV has captured the incident or the two accused. “We have booked the two accused for assault. A manhunt has been launched to trace the two men,” said a police officer from Marine Drive police station. 

Dr Sagar Sakle, spokesperson of Bombay Hospital, said: “She has received stab wounds on both her forearms but they are not very deep. We have kept her under observation for 24 hours after which she can go back home.”
