A 31-year-old woman, Aisha Shaikh, who was allegedly trying to commit suicide by drowning, was rescued on Tuesday by four alert lifeguards on the Aksa Beach. She was depressed over her illness for the last six months, the police said.
On Tuesday, Aisha, who lives in Millenium Society Plots in Malwani, dropped her son off at school and headed for the beach.
Senior lifeguard Rajnikanth Mashelkar said, “Around 1.30pm, the woman started walking towards the deep waters despite the high hide. She was wading through five-foot-deep water when a lifeguard got doubtful and informed the other lifeguards.”
Lifeguards Mohan Erande, Sachin Mulik, Samir Koli and Jai Koli — all aged between 20 and 24 — collected rescue equipment and ran in.
“Fortunately, the current was not strong and she was wearing a burkha, which kept her afloat for a while. Before she could go deeper, the four pulled her out and took her back to the shore,” Mashelkar said.
Aisha, however, was angry at being rescued. She was later taken to the Malwani police who recorded her statement and handed her over to her family who got her hospitalised.
