The three include the victim’s husband and in-laws.
Surekha hung herself from the ceiling fan at her maternal residence in Manohar Das Wadi in Ghatkopar on Saturday when she was alone at home. Her parents rushed her to the New Life hospital on returning home. However, she was declared dead before admission.
Surekha’s father Gopal Gagh, 65, approached the Ghatkopar police and filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws. He alleged that she had committed suicide after being tortured by them over a heart ailment that she suffered from.
Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Surekha’s husband Ameya, 30, and his parents Shantaram, 65, and Sushka Kadam, 60.
The accused were arrested form their residence in Dongri and produced at the Bhoiwada holiday court.
During investigation, police officials came to know that Surekha and Ameya got married in the month of May. Soon after, Ameya came to know that Surekha suffered from a serious heart ailment.
She reportedly had a hole in her heart for which she was undergoing treatment since before her marriage.
After learning about this, Ameya got upset with her and informed his parents about her ailment. The trio then started torturing and harassing Surekha. About a month ago, she was asked to leave the house and go back to her parents.
A senior police officer said, “Though Surekha pleaded with her husband and in-laws to allow her to stay with them, the accused did not listen to her. They were upset with her as her parents did not inform them about her heart ailment when the match was being fixed.”
He added, “The complainant mentioned that Surekha tried to convince Ameya on several occasions to take her back. However, her repeated attempts failed, and finally she committed suicide on Saturday.”
