Woman fights for life, mother blames pothole

In an accident which might have been caused by a pothole on the Western Express Highway, a 23-year-old MBA graduate was injured grievously and is now battling for her life in the ICU of a hospital.

The incident occurred last week when Mallika Kapoor was pillion riding on a bike with her male friend towards Oberoi Mall in Goregaon. When they were near Hub Mall, their bike was hit by a truck from behind. Mallika fell under the wheels of the big vehicle and was severely injured.

Mallika’s mother Madhu Kapoor has put the blame squarely on the potholes on the road. She said, “The bike was trying to avoid a pothole by diverting a bit when the truck hit them from behind.”

CEO of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri, where Mallika is admitted, Dr Ram Narain said, “She is critical and on ventilator.”

Madhu plans to approach the authorities concerned to complain about the potholes and to seek compensation. “I want the authorities to take action immediately. These potholes on the roads have injured many and claimed lives,” she said.

Mallika works in a private firm in Sakinaka and lives with her parents in Oshiwara. She has suffered multiple injuries.

The police, however, have said that the cause of accident was not a pothole. Motiram Kadam, senior PI of Vanrai police station, said, “The truck hit the bike while it was trying to overtake and she came under its wheels. Her friend suffered minor injuries. The accident has nothing to do with potholes. We will be investigating the matter.”

The truck driver is on the run.
