Woman abandons baby girl at Sewri

The Sewri police have arrested a 20-year-old woman for abandoning a newborn baby girl. The body of the baby was found lying near Rajsingh corporation Ganesh Garage in Kawlabunder area of Sewri by locals around 3:30 pm on Wednesday.

The locals informed the police who during the course of the investigations police found out that some locals had spotted a woman residing in Kawlabunder slums abandoning the baby. The woman, Hasina Shaikh, was located and has been arrested by the police who are now trying to ascertain why Shaikh, a house wife had abandoned the baby.


Police raid dance bar in Borivali

The Social service branch (SSB) of the Mumbai police raided a dance bar in Borivali and arrested 73 persons. The raid was conducted in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Acting on a tip off that a dance bar was illegally operating in the area, the raid was conducted at Park Side hotel around 12:40 am. The police first sent a decoy customer and once they received a confirmation, they barged in. Out of the total arrests made, 19 are bar girls and 35 customers.

The police have also arrested the manager and some waiters of the dance bar. Cash to the tune of Rs1.92 lakh has also been seized from the bar. The arrested persons have been booked under section 294 of IPC.

Custody of former Bishop extended

The court on Thursday extended the police custody of the former Pune Bishop Vijay Sathe in case of the Afghan Church plot matter. The custody was extended till October 1.

“We demanded further custody as investigations need to be continued. We have searched his house and found some account details that we cannot disclose as of now,” said SB Jagdale, investigation officer of the case.

The police are yet to arrest more accused in the case. This includes one trustee of the Bombay Diocesan Trust Association Private Limited, Shirkant Salvi who gave a slip to the police station when the arrest proceedings were on.

A few other trustees like Prem Masih of the Indian Church Trustees, Calcutta and another Bishop of Gujarat, VM Malaviya have received interim bail in the case.

Dacoits loot stock broking office

Rs1.3 crores were looted by dacoits from a stock broking office in broad day light on Thursday.

Four armed dacoits forced themselves inside the office of Shilpa Stock broking agency pvt ltd at Uttam Nagar in Nashik at around 10.30 am. They threatened the staff and some clients present and fired two rounds from their gun in air. They snatched away Rs 1.3 crores from the office and ran away.

According to eye witnesses, the four men had masked their faces with handkerchiefs and two of them were wearing helmets. They had come on two bikes which had no number plates.

Ambad police have registered a case of theft and dacoity and further investigations are being conducted.

Eastern Freeway project news

The report of a committee appointed to probe July’s mishap at the under construction Eastern Freeway project has blamed “unanticipated mechanical issues not attributable to negligence” for the collapse which had caused the death of one person.

“…the committee agreed with the project management consultants (PMC) findings that the current accident… (occurred due to) unanticipated mechanical issues not attributable to negligence arising during the gluing operations,” said Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Commissioner Rahul Asthana.

The 16.8 km long and around Rs1,100 crore Eastern Freeway project runs from PD Mello Road to Ghatkopar in three stages. The three member committee, consisted of Ravi Sinha, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology (Mumbai), SB Tamsekar, Chief Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD) and PRK Murthy, Chief of the Transport and Communication Division of the MMRDA. Launching of around 270 spans on the road had been completed prior to the accident.

Asthana added that the committee had also suggested remedial measures to be taken like deputing dedicated safety officials for each launching girders and barricading the area below when overhead launching girders were used to prevent any traffic movement.

The contractors for the project– Simplex Infrastructure Limited– had also worked with the MMRDA on Lalbaug flyover project and action to debar them from taking up any work with MMRDA for two years has already been initiated for alleged failure to observe safety norms in the Lalbaug project.

“We will take a consolidated view and will take action,” Asthana said.
