The political turmoil created after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s visit to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office on Monday could have larger implications in days to come.
But for Thackeray, it was nothing but a formal meeting over a cup of tea.
“It was just a matter of tea and nothing else. Why people see politics in this is something I do not understand. I was there for a party’s programme and the venue was in front of the BJP party office. I went there after finishing the programme. BJP members invited me over for a cup of tea. Am I supposed to say, ‘I can’t come’?” he asked. He also mentioned that, he has been going there for many years. “It was a coincidence, that’s it,” he said.
Thackeray’s visit to the BJP head office did not go down too well with the Shiv Sena high command on Monday. However, on Tuesday Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray had a discussion with BJP leaders LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj after which the party decided to participate in the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) rally against corruption on Wednesday.
Party held a meeting at Sena bhavan on Tuesday after which Uddhav Thackeray announced the decision.
“We held a discussion with Advani and Swaraj. After which we have decided to participate in tomorrow’s rally,” he said. He added that BJP leader Gopinath Munde played the vital role as a mediator.
A month ago, BJP was very upset with Sena over the defeat of leader of the opposition Eknath Khadse’s son Nikhil in the state’s upper assembly elections. Khadse had accused Sena of giving poor support in the local self government constituency of Jalgaon.
Reiterating Raj Thackeray’s statement, senior leader, BJP, Vinod Tawde said, “Why people see politics in one cup of tea I really do not understand. It was nothing but a formal meeting.”
BJP state president Sudhir Munguntiwar had his face-off with Raj Thackeray earlier this year during the campaign for Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation elections, where he had accused Raj Thackeray of being Sharad Pawar’s test tube baby.
