Western Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of the Government of India, has sanctioned Rs 30 crore to the Railways for provision of escalators in Mumbai's suburban area under the coal company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan.

This fund will be utilised for providing 30 escalators of which 25 will be on Central Railway stations and 5 on Western Railway stations. The escalators are expected to be provided during the current financial year. 

Central Railway has already provided 15 escalators at 11 suburban stations. Nineteen escalators sanctioned for 7 Central Railway stations and 16 sanctioned for 8 other stations by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation are under procurement. With the sanction of 25 escalators by Western Coalfields Limited at 19 stations, the total number of escalators on suburban stations of Central Railway will go to 75. 

Western Coalfields Limited handed over the demand draft of Rs 30 Crore to Railways on April 4.
