The SP Jain Institute of Management Studies & Research (SPJIMR) is starting, what it calls, a “global” Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme from this year.

The four-year undergraduate programme will have a twin city model, wherein students will spend the first two years at the SP Jain campus in Singapore, followed by two years at its Sydney campus.

Dawn Dekle, dean of the BBA programme, speaks with DNA about the programme and what it has to offer to students.

What is the scope of the programme?
Studying for an undergraduate degree is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As many high school students are often unsure of their career path, the BBA course has been designed as a well-rounded one which will help students develop their critical thinking skills, grounded in a firm foundation of liberal arts.

This will prepare them for several career options. Both Singapore and Australia are recognised as financial and educational hubs and would serve as perfect launch pads to global careers.
It will expose students to diverse business conditions and challenges. This dual residential and geographical aspect will enable our students to acquire much-needed smart skills and a global mindset.

Will it be an SP Jain degree?
The BBA programme is accredited by the Department of Education and Training, New South Wales, Australia. So, students will get an Australian degree which will be awarded by S P Jain Centre of Management, Australia, at the end of the programme.
We have corporate relations offices in India, mid-east, South-east Asia, and another one is being planned in Sydney. They will facilitate placements for the students.

What will be the course composition?

Students will need to acquire 106 credits over four years. Students will have to complete 34 subjects including 22 core subjects, four liberal arts subjects and 8 special business subjects.

There will be one action learning project aligned to their chosen specialisation subject.

Will students be offered any scholarships?
The course will cost $12,700 annually. Over 50% of the students will be on 100% scholarships.

To ensure that we have the most deserving students, we had asked school principals to nominate two of their best
students.

We are aiming at very high quality and diversity. We intend to have 100 students in the first batch, of which half will be from India itself. To get a feel of the programme, we have invited many students to come to our Singapore campus.

This one-week “bridge to BBA” in July will enable them to get a taste of what it will be to be a BBA student.

It will involve onsite visits and students will be able to understand fully the career options available after they graduate.

Will there be separate faculty for Singapore and Sydney?
Full-time faculty will be based in both the cities. While faculty for the Singapore campus has already been hired, we will hire more in the second semester.

Next year, we will start advertising in Australia for our Sydney campus. Some of our faculty members from Singapore campus may also go to Australia for short durations.
