To make matters worse, the hospital’s official complaint to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fell on deaf ears, as there was no action forthcoming from the civic body.

Sassoon Hospital and BJ Medical College dean, Dr Renu Bharadwaj, told DNA the problem had started on Thursday when they received scant water supply. However, Bharadwaj said there was absolutely no water supply since Saturday.

According to Bharadwaj, there was no water in the residents’ hostels and the nurses’ quarters since Saturday, forcing the hospital to requisition water tankers.

Sassoon hospital administration head, Salim Shaikh told DNA, “We require 16 lakh litres of water every day. Such a situation has not arisen in the last 25 years. This is the first time we are facing such a problem.’’

According to sources, things started moving only on Tuesday afternoon, following a visit from district collector Vikas Deshmukh who came in for an eye check-up. “When informed of the situation, the collector spoke to the PMC and we realised that four pipelines were facing an air blockage,’’ the source said.

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade told DNA on Tuesday that the repairs on the blocked pipelines began on Tuesday. “Our engineers have identified the problem with the underground pipes near Sancheti Hospital. We have begun repairs and should restore the situation soon."
