On Tuesday, when Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde announced a shutdown of the common online admission for First Year Junior College (FYJC) in Mumbai for a day, following persistent failure of the online portal to handle traffic, he blamed the server and low bandwidth for the fiasco. He also said that an IT vendor had been directed to add servers and increase bandwidth in 24 hours.

The IT firm handling the process this year, NYSA’s technical consultant Sachin Verma, however, claims, “It was a virus attack which led to problems in the FYJC admission portal on Monday.”

Verma did not disclose the type of virus or details of the damage, he claimed the problem was resolved by Tuesday evening. The company official said that the form filling process would resume Thursday 10 am as announced earlier.

Scores of students across Mumbai region complained they failed to submit their forms despite several efforts as the website ran slow, hanged repeatedly and crashed.

Meanwhile, students and parents have demanded an extension for completing the admission process. BB Chavan, Deputy Director of Education for Mumbai region, said, “We have asked for a detailed report by Thursday. If issues still exist, we will consider a 3-7 day extension.”
