A builder and his friend were fired upon by some people at Kumbharpada in Virar (East) on Sunday. However, they escaped unhurt as they successfully ducked the bullets and ran away from the spot.

According to the Virar police, who are investigating the case, the incident happened after a spat between the two parties over a plot of land. The builder and his friend got into an argument with the accused over the alleged encroachment of the land by the latter. In the heat of the moment, the latter opened four rounds of fire.

The complainant, Anand Mhatre, 42, is a resident of Arnala village. The confrontation was over the two acres of his land. "After an argument, one of them removed a weapon and fired four rounds. The police have found the spent cartridges from the spot. We went to the police and filed a complaint against them," said Mhatre.

A senior officer from Virar police station said: "We have taken the statements of the victims and have registered the case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act. We are investigating the matter."
