The upcoming civic election in February and certain administrative procedures could delay the project further.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) long-standing plan of installing vehicles scanners at its octroi nakas may finally start materialising this January, but the upcoming civic election in February and certain administrative procedures could delay the project further.
The plan, which civic officials mulled over for nearly six years, had reportedly hit a roadblock after fears were expressed over possible health hazards due to radiation from the X-ray scanners. Subsequently, the corporation approached the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to look into the matter.
On November 3, in a meeting with authorities from the civic body, BARC officials gave a partial go-ahead to the project, suggesting that the BMC should ensure that no people are inside the vehicle while it is being scanned.
The process installation and commissioning is expected to take a year, say civic body sources.
Additional municipal commissioner Rajiv Jalota did not specify the exact period when the system would be operational, but hinted that the BMC is planning to take its time to check the feasibility of the system in coping with scanning vehicles during peak hours.
