MUMBAI
Staff also deflates tyre of ashram’s ambulance parked in hospital compound; minorities commission intervenes.
The staff of a Navi Mumbai civic hospital allegedly deflated the tyre of an ambulance belonging to a home for destitutes on Thursday when it brought a critically ill patient for treatment. Doctors in the casualty ward of the hospital also refused to admit the 20-year-old, who later died.
The medical superintendent of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation-run hospital in Vashi eventually apologised for the mistreatment, but only after the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission (MSMC) intervened.
The ambulance belonged to Social and Evangelical Association for Love (SEAL), which runs a shelter for HIV+ destitutes and children at Vangani near Panvel. The vehicle was parked in the hospital compound when the tyre was deflated.
On Thursday afternoon, the ambulance had picked up the patient, who was suffering stomach tuberculosis, and was taking him back to the home when he developed complications.
“He was gasping for breath and we took him back to the hospital. Doctors in the casualty ward refused to see him saying that he had been discharged,” said pastor Biju Samuel of SEAL.
When the ashram staff returned to the ambulance, they found the front left tyre deflated.
The 10-year-old home, which has over 150 inmates, rescues seriously ill and abandoned people from the streets. While the staff at the ashram is trained to give preliminary medical care, seriously ill inmates are brought to hospitals like the one at Vashi.
The ashram has complained that the hospital staff is sometimes reluctant to attend to patients brought by them because, in many cases, they have maggot-infested wounds.
Vice-chairman of the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission, Dr Abraham Mathai, who spoke to the hospital authorities after a call for help from SEAL ashram, said, “The ashram is doing the job of the state by picking up destitutes from the streets and caring for them. They are doing work that nobody wants to do. So it is a shame that junior staff at the hospital behave rudely with patients and staff from the ashram.”
Dr Prashant Jawade, superintendent of the hospital, said that he has apologised to the commission for the behaviour of his staff.
But he denied that the tyre was deflated.
“The ambulance driver was asked to drive it away after bringing the patient. When he did not listen, our security staff got angry,” said Jawade.
When asked about the hospital staff’s behaviour with patients from SEAL ashram, Dr Jawade said, “This patient had been discharged because he needed six to seven months of treatment at the ashram. Patients brought by SEAL are often abandoned in the hospital. We already have 15 destitute patients and not enough staff to take care of them. I agree that the ashram is doing good work, but we also have problems.”
