The pistol that Varsha Bhosle used to shoot herself with at her house in Peddar Road on Monday allegedly belongs to her mother, veteran singer Asha Bhosle. Family members told the police on Tuesday that Asha had misplaced the weapon about 30-35 years ago. The police said they will conduct more investigations into this.

Earlier in the day, the police were groping in the dark while trying to zero in on the owner of the pistol. They had said they would look at whether Asha and Varsha’s former husband, Hemant Kenkre, owned a firearm, if it was registered, where it is now and if they had a permit to own such a weapon. The police were also planning to ascertain if Varsha’s close friend, Gautam Rajyadaksh, who died around three years ago, had owned a pistol and if he had passed it on to her. Even her older sibling, Anand Bhosle, who already owns a pistol, was expected to be questioned over the possibility of having in his possession more firearms the police were unaware of.

The police are also trying to find out what medication and treatment a “depressive” Varsha was on at the time of her death.

Sources said she had plunged into depression after her divorce in 1998. Her condition reportedly deteriorated following Rajyadaksh’s death. “She lost the enthusiasm for life and started staying all by herself,” a close friend of Varsha told the police.

So far, the statements of Dipali Mane, the maid who raised an alarm after failing to get a response to her repeated knocks on the door, and driver Vijay Nakashe, who found the body, have been recorded. Asha’s statement is yet to be taken.
