A private van ferrying six students overturned at the east-west flyover in Kandivli on Tuesday morning. The bus was on its way to drop students at the Children's Academy School in Kandivli , when the incident took place at 6.45 am.

As per sources, the bus overturned on the drivers side after a speeding vehicle hit the back of the van. However, a statement issued by police stated that the two vehicles collided. "We reached the spot immediately after locals informed us about the accident. No one was injured and as it was minor collision, no one lodged a complaint. We have made the diary entry of the minor accident," said Mukund Pawar, police inspector at Kandivli police station.

While all the students escaped with minor injuries, the danger could have been averted had parents paid heed to repeated warnings issued by the school in this regard. "We have repeatedly warned parents to not send their children in these illegal vans as they come with a large number of safety hazards. The school has its own buses and authorised vehicles," said Rohit Bhat, CEO of the Children's Academy group.

Bhat said that the van that met with an accident on Tuesday was one of ten vehicles that the school had listed to the local police station and the RTO raising concerns over the fact that they were plying school students despite not being authorised by the school.

Anil Garg, President, School Bus Owners Association said that it was high time RTO officials take strict action against such vans. "There are thousands of vans flouting norms. We are going to file a case against the transport department and RTO officials for not taking action against the van despite the complaints, he added.

Parents whose children were travelling in the van, however, said that they did not blame the van for the accident. "The van driver was not at fault. It was the other vehicle that lost control leading to the accident. We have been sending our child in the van for the last three years" said one of the parents on the condition of anonymity.
