To tackle encroachments and unauthorised constructions, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had decided to set up an urban police station and police chowkis. It had sent a proposal to the state government for approval last year. However, the proposal is yet to be okayed.

The state government had issued a government resolution (GR) in March 2009 to all municipal corporations and municipal councils to set up urban police stations and police chowkis to take action against encroachments.

The government had asked the civic bodies to send a report listing the number of police stations, chowkis and the new posts that would have to be created. The expenditure would have to be borne by the municipal corporation.

The PCMC had send the proposal to state government last year, but it has not received approval, said PCMC commissioner Ashish Sharma.

The township is developing rapidly and complaints against unauthorised constructions are growing.

Personnel at the proposed urban police stations would take action against unauthorised constructions, encroachments, illegal parking and dumping of debris. The government had also mooted separate courts to conduct trials related to such offences.

As per the plan, police station and chowkis will together have 106 police personnel, which includes 80 constables. For the police station, the municipal corporation has recommended 26 posts, including those of an inspector, six assistant sub-inspectors and 20 constables. For each chowki, 20 new posts are proposed to
be created.

While the police station will be headed by an officer of the rank of inspector, the police chowkis will have sub-inspectors and other duty officers. Around 40 new posts will have to be created. In addition, the PCMC would have to provide them with the required offices and vehicles.

The urban police station would work under the administrative control of the municipal corporation. The PCMC has already sent its report to the government along with the resolution approved by the general body for creating the new police station.

The civic body in May 2009 drafted a plan for setting up chowkis in each of the four divisional offices areas to tackle complaints related to encroachments and unauthorised constructions.
