BMC is loaded with more than 30,000 suggestions or objections regarding tree cutting at Aarey colony for the construction of the Metro 3 Car shed. According to sources, there are chances of a heated public meeting over the issue at the Garden Department office in Byculla.

There were a lot of objections from locals and tree activists over the Metro car shed at Aarey Milk Colony. When Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) sought permission from the tree authority to cut down 2,702 trees for the carshed, the authority released a proposal asking people to register their suggestions and objections and declared public hearing on October 10.

Over 5,000 objections were filed in the first three days against tree cutting, an activist said. The BMC was loaded with more than 30,000 letters, mostly emails, on Tuesday. Names and addresses have been enclosed on every mail so that the BMC can't call them false. We have sent more than four thousand letters too, another activist said.

We weren't expecting this much response. Civic body is only doing its duty and MMRCL is concerning authority. We will put forward all the objection to it, said BMC officer. We will require at least two weeks to sort out suggestion objection, he added.

BMC should respect people opinion. In the history of Mumbai this is the biggest number of objection. There is option of another land for Carshed. Why they want to build it in Aarey which is a lung of the city, asked D Stalin of Vanshakti, one of the organisation who is part of Save Aarey initiative.

An online petition objecting to cutting of trees in Aarey Colony for the construction of Metro car shed has garnered over 25 thousand signatures within five days. The petition was launched by members of the Let Mumbai Breathe and Save Aarey forest collectives on October 2.
