Locals from Ambika Nagar near Wagle Estate were left fuming after a man alleged to be from Shiv Sena was seen distributing money in the wards. He was caught red-handed and his shirt was torn by the locals. The police team later managed to pull him out before he was lynched by the crowd.

According to the police, the man identified as Shahji Javir (48) was questioned for allegedly distributing cash in Ambika Nagar of Wagle Estate in Thane. The locals thrashed the man and the police had to intervene to defuse the situation.

"We have been informed that the man was caught distributing cash in the slums. He has been taken to the police station for questioning," said a police officer.

"The locals assaulted the man and were angry that he was in possession of cash in Rs 100 denomination and was distributing it to people, asking them to vote for Shiv Sena," said the police officer.

Sukhada Narkar, PRO for Thane police department said, "We are registering the offence under The Representation of the People Act for violating the poll code of conduct at Wagle Estate police station and are investigating further."
