At 3.15pm, the three men, aged between 25 and 30 years, barged into the Pandeys' flat opposite Takshasheela society in the MIDC area of Andheri (East).

Aruna Pandey and her 12-year-old son were at home at that time. Her husband Pramod was at work and her other son, aged 15, was at school, the police said.

“The men caught Pandey's son and tied him to a chair in the living room. They threatened Pandey to hand over money, which they claimed Pramod owed them. When she refused to give them any money saying she was unaware of any monetary dispute between them and her husband, they started assaulted her. They dragged her to another room and slit her throat with a knife,”  said inspector Mohan Waghmare of the MIDC police station.

Before fleeing, they snatched the gold chain from her neck. “A few minutes later, Pandey's son managed to free himself. He alerted his neighbours, who then informed the police,” added Waghmare.

Pandey was taken to a nearby hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. Her body has been sent for a post-mortem.“We are checking if Pramod had any monetary dispute with anyone. Preliminary investigation suggests that robbery could not be the only motive. We have registered a case of murder,” said Waghmare.

The police are questioning Pramod and his son for leads in the case.
