It is said that the next world war would be over water.
In order to avoid this imminent disaster, students of Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) are supporting the idea of making water a tradable commodity by introducing ‘water credits’ on the lines of ‘carbon credits’.

ICT’s annual technical festival ‘Exergy 2012’ scheduled from January 19-22, is based on the theme of efficient management of water. Raunak Pujari, media manager of ICT Exergy told DNA, “Our theme is ‘Water; its appreciation, conservation and efficient management’ and we are associated with the United Nations and their Water for Life Campaign.”

Over 119 colleges and 64 cities across India will attend the fourth edition of Exergy. The water credit is like a tradable certificate on the lines of carbon credit which will display the quantity of water saved by an organisation or an individual to help maximum utilisation of every drop of water. The credits will allow the holder to trade the conserved water in the international market at current market price.

The idea, originally conceived by Shripad Vaidya, an environmentalist, is now endorsed by many organisations working in the field of environment (some of them will be attending the Exergy also).

The idea appealed to the National Innovation Foundation and its parent body, World Innovation Foundation and they are currently working on it.
