Thane societies go green on World Environment day

To mark the World Environment Day, while many NGOs and even TMC had initiated several drives like planting saplings across the city and organising a cycle to work event, the housing societies were not far behind as they too, celebrated the day with equal enthusiasm.

Senior residents and children, along with the members from the Progressive Thane Residents Welfare Association (PTRA), and the members from the Vasant Vihar Appexe society conducted a plantation drive at Vasant Vihar and planted around 100 saplings.

K Kumar, president PTRA, said, "The plantation drive is not only one day affair for us. In fact, we keep planting saplings around the year in our complexes to maintain the green cover of the city. This drive was done on the day dedicated to the environment to bring people together for a noble cause."

NGO Go Freen Foundation had organised the green celebration at Ma Niketan home for children and brought together 250 children from various societies to promote the green concept. Many activities including, skit, drawing competition, bird-watching, butterfly and insect identification was conducted to make the kids familiar with their surrounding. During the event, the children were explained the importance of nature and why it is important to preserve it. The visitors, too, participated in various events and celebrated the green day.

There was another group of residents which had organised prayers and the participants pledged to protect the trees and environment in the city.
