MUMBAI
In a rare decision by the University of Mumbai, the affiliation of Arts, Science and Commerce College Vikramgad was revoked on Thursday.
The college, in the tribal area of Thane district near Jawahar, does not have proper infrastructure and qualified faculty.
“Taking students’ career into consideration, the council decided that the de-affiliation move would come into effect from 2014-15,” said an academic council member.
The 30-member academic council, which is entitled to take decisions on academic matters, met at the Fort campus on Monday. The inquiry against the college was pending for many years. A professor questioned the university’s motive to allow such colleges and conduct exams without verifying the credentials.
“The college was flouting various norms and had failed to pull up its socks even after repeated warnings,” said TA Shiware, a member of the council.
The council has now directed the Board of Colleges and University Development to make arrangements to accommodate the students in nearby colleges.
Pro vice chancellor Naresh Chandra said: “The institute is about a decade old and has around 700 students in arts, science and commerce faculties.” It is run by Sanjeevan Gramin Vaidakiya and Samajik Sahayata Pratisthan. The college management couldn’t be contacted for its comment.
Chandra said this was not the first time that the university had de-affiliated a college.
