Maharashtra chief minister Pritiviraj Chavan has reportedly assured a delegation of MLAs from Thane district of holding a meeting on bifurcation of the district.MLA Kisan Kathore, who led the delegation over the demand of carving out Kalyan district from Thane, which has the highest population of 1.11 crore in the country, said that the chief minister assured the delegates that they would be taken in confidence before any decision regarding the new district(s) is taken.In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister, about fifty percent of the MLAs and MPs  have opined that Kalyan be made a separate district.According to Kathore, Kalyan district may comprise of about 40 lakh population while the Thane (Suburban) district which can comprise of parts of Thane, Navi Mumbai and Bhayander, may account for a population of another 40 lakhs and the rest i.e 30 lakh can be included in Thane (Rural) district.
