Those persistently pursuing the objects of their affection better be wary this Valentine's Day. Thane cops will be vigilant about enthusiastic unwanted overtures. February 14 may be a day for lovers, but it is also a day dreaded by many women who find themselves in awkward and harmful situations as recipients of unwanted attention and proposals. To keep casual harassment in check and ensure the safety of women, Thane police intends to post squads outside schools and colleges.

"Our officers in plain clothes will keep an eye on those misbehaving with women to prevent cases of harassment or molestation that are common on V-Day," said Deepak Devraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Thane. Cops will also patrol surrounding and isolated areas to keep a check on stalkers and potential trouble-makers.

"V-Day should be celebrated peacefully, and with consent," he said. "But sometimes things take a violent turn. Our patrolling vans will try to create awareness among the youth and general people about mutual consent." The police will also be on the lookout for possible troublemakers who sour this day.

This has elicited a sigh of relief from students. "While V-Day is a celebration of love, in India it has become a day for moral policing. Some of the political parties use it as a day to punish youth," says Anil Joshi (name changed), "It's good that police is there to keep troublesome elements away."

In case anyone is harassed, they can approach the nearest police station and the perpetrators will be taken to task. "Students need not fear us; they can lodge a complaint and we will take immediate action," Devraj assured.
