Thane Municipal Corporation, KDMC to cut water supply once every week

TMC and Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation have decided to go on a 24-hour water-cut every week until monsoon next year

In a major set back for Thane, Kalyan and Dombivli residents, the local civic bodies have decided to cut the water supply once every week.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) have decided to go on a 24-hour water-cut every week until monsoon next year.

"We received an intimation from STEM (Shahad Temghar) on Friday. It said the agency will not supply water one day every week. We will take 15 % water cut and there will be no water supply on Mondays," said Sandip Malvi, public relations officer, TMC.

Over 20 lakh people live in Thane which receives over 480 MLD (Millions of Liters Per Day) water from STEM, MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) and other resources.

Similarly, starting from October 22 there will be no water in Kalyan and Dombivli for a day.

"Water supply from KDMC's water purification plants at Barave, Netivali and Titwala will remain closed once a week," said Prasad Thakur, public relations officer, KDMC. "There will be water-cut every Tuesday in Kalyan, Dombivli," he adds.

Twin cities Kalyan-Dombivli have a population of over 13 lakh and need over 400 MLD water.

Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) is yet to decide on water-cuts under its jurisdiction. "We have not decided on water cuts, nor have been communicated by any department," said Achyut Hange, the newly-appointed UMC commissioner.

Thane district receives water from four lakes - Bhatsa, Tansa, Barave and Modak Sagar.

The water level in these dams till date is - Bhatsa (90 per cent), Tansa (85.92 per cent), Barave (96.04 per cent) and Modak Sagar (77.04 per cent).
