Cops doling out hockey-stick treatment on criminals is not uncommon, but this policeman from Thane decided to use the same method on his senior after being given an adverse remark for dereliction of duty.Constable Ashish Utekar from Wagle Estate police station landed behind bars after he thrashed sub-inspector Sunil Sakpal with the sports gear. Sources attributed Utekar's outburst to his past discord with the senior.Sakpal had on September 17 asked the constable to take an accused to Thane Civil hospital for a medical test. While Utekar agreed to do the job, he chose not to go to the hospital. This was noted by Sakpal and recorded in the station diaryAlmost three days later, on September 21, at around 6pm at Wagle estate police station main room, the duo were left alone in the room where they had an argument which quikly turned violent. On hearing Sakpal's cries of help, others rushed into the room and caught Utekar thrashing him. A case under section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code was immediately lodged against him.Sakpal said that, "On the day of the incident, I was alone in the office with Utekar and we had a misunderstanding which lead to the outburst. I was admitted to the civil hospital for a day. I have been asked to take rest and will soon resume work. The constable was arrested on the spot."Another police official said, "The inspector and constable have a history or skirmishes. They have argued many times before in the police station."D Kshirsagar, senior police inspector from Wagle estate says, "We arrested the constable who was later produced in a court which put him under police custody for three days. We are investigating with the constable and what led him to take such an extreme step."
