MUMBAI
In previous years, BMC contractors had around 72 quarries in Navi Mumbai at their disposal to source stone chips for road repairs.
After the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Chief Engineer-Roads met the Thane Collector explaining the need for raw materials for pre-monsoon road repairs, the Thane Collector office has allowed three quarries in Navi Mumbai to operate as a special case, from where BMC can source raw materials for road works.
In previous years, BMC contractors had around 72 quarries in Navi Mumbai at their disposal to source stone chips for road repairs.
Road works undertaken by BMC have been hit badly as quarries in Navi Mumbai are shut. BMC had undertaken over 1000 road works as pre-monsoon preparations, of which work on 583 roads is incomplete as quarries in Navi Mumbai have been shut since April 1.
Additional Municipal Commissioner, Sanjay Deshmukh said, "The Thane Collector has allowed three quarries to operate, from where BMC can take the raw materials. Although the three quarries will not be sufficient for the amount of raw materials we need for road repairs, the work will not halt. We are still hopeful that all road repairs will be completed before monsoon".
"Since the quarries are shut, road works in the city have not stopped altogether. We are using the stored raw materials with the contractor and are bringing them from Raigad district. But these are not sufficient", a civic official said.
