Thane residents can look forward to less traffic congestion due to Metro works on Ghodbunder Road. A meeting was held by Thane police along with MMRDA, MSEB, and other stakeholders to take efforts to reduce traffic jams in the city. They unanimously decided upon certain points like finish work on time, barricade only those parts of the road where Metro work is on, etc.

The start of Metro Rail works at Ghodbunder Road is a cause of traffic jams on the Eastern Express Highway as well as internal roads. Thanekars, who thought that the worst was over in October after Mumbra bypass opened and decongested Thane roads, are now stressed due to congestion on the road due to Metro work.

To address these issues a joint meeting was held by Madhukar Pandey, joint police commissioner, Thane with Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), MSEB, Mahanagar gas, Tata, Reliance and Public Works Department (PWD).

It was decided that all these bodies will start the road digging work at the same time after receiving traffic NOC. For instance, if PWD, Mahanagar Gas and Tata Power have got NOC by Thane traffic police to dig the road for their specified purpose on a particular part of the road, they should start the work together. "No NOC will be given to these bodies for the same road to begin their work in a different time period," said a senior police official.

Moreover, if they fail to start their work in the stipulated time frame, then they will not be given NOC for the entire year. The MMRDA should do its Metro work in phases and barricade only the required part of the road at that time.

The MMRDA was also asked to appoint traffic wardens to manage traffic on the road. If any of the above-mentioned body wants to dig the road, then traffic NOC will be given only for the required patch of the road.

Reny Varghese, who lives near Ghodbunder Road, has welcomed this decision. "I think partial barricading of the road for Metro work will help reduce a lot of congestion," he said. He also suggested that the entry of heavy vehicles should be banned in Thane. "Since Metro work is on at Western express highway, they have banned entry for heavy vehicles. They should implement a similar model in Thane as well," he added.
