On Tuesday, the Thane Municipal Corporation became the first in the country to launch its own mobile application, DigiThane. This free app aims to provide information to Thanekars about TMC services, events, shows, eat out options and also help them pay their taxes and bills through a smart card.

On January 23, Thane city took the big step towards becoming a smart city by launching its own citizen-friendly mobile app, a digicard and a website, digithane.thanecity.gov.in. Thanekars can now login to the app/website to get news about TMC activities in their area.

For instance, if the civic body undertakes road repair on a particular route, it will be updated on the app a day earlier so that citizens can plan their route accordingly.  Real time alerts about water cuts, road repairs, etc., will also be provided.

The event corner lists upcoming plays and movie shows in the city.  One of the most engaging features called “benefits” has over 200 merchants and eateries listed under it.  Here citizens can go through the list of hotels, shops, spas, gyms, etc., and also know about discounts offered by them.  Google Maps also shows to route to the shop, hotel, etc.

“This is a three-way permanent engagement platform.  It connects TMC to citizens, businesses to citizens and citizens to citizens,” says Sunil Chavan, additional municipal commissioner, TMC.

Along with DigiThane, TMC also rolled out its digicard, which residents can buy for Rs 100 and use it to pay for TMC taxes and services. This prepaid card is in partnership with HDFC Bank with a maximum limit of Rs 50,000. “Forty percent of the population in Thane is from slums and this card is meant for those who do not have access to bank accounts or are not educated to use mobile applications.  The payment feature in the mobile app will, however, be added in a month’s time.”

“This app and the digicard is our step towards cashless transaction and digital India visualized by our PM Narendra Modiji,” says Chavan.

The app was launched by Sena youth wing leader Aaditya Thackeray in the presence of Tel Aviv’s mayor Ron Huldai.
