In some heartening news for sportspersons and children of Thane, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to develop 36 playgrounds within its jurisdiction. In addition, two sports complexes will also be built in the city.

Several sportsmen from Thane have made it to national and international level but the city lacks enough playgrounds for budding players as well as children. So, on Saturday, Thane mayor Sanjay More announced that this need will be taken care of.

"We will develop 36 playgrounds on plots reserved for the same," he said on the sidelines of announcing TMC's inter-school competition on Saturday. "In all, 129 plots have been reserved for playgrounds, of which 36 are in our possession. We will develop these 36 plots," he said.

"We will also develop two sports complexes at Ghodbunder road," he added. At present, there is only one mini sports complex at Dhokali and the Dadoji Kondev stadium near Thane station.

Meanwhile, the TMC also announced its inter-school sports competition, which begins on July 30, in which 3,000 students from TMC and private schools will participate. The competition will kick off with Subroto Banerjee football tournament. Various other competitions will continue till December.
