Environmentalists are worried about the sorry situation faced by Ambernath residents, who live amidst extreme air and water pollution. Apart from being a psychological irritant, pollution also comes with health hazards that affect the current and future generations. Activists say that the MPCB should be prosecuted for its lax attitude and a class suit should be filed against the government.

The hilly town of Ambernath is slowly being transformed into a pollution hub of Thane district. The dumping yard in the town and disposal of chemical effluents, have made the situation alarming. “People have respiratory ailments and many of them have even contracted cancer,” alleges activist Satyajit Burman, president of Ambernath citizens forum (ACF).  “We have raised the issue with local authorities but to no avail,” he added.

Environmentalist Rishi Aggarwal said that it is a sad and unfortunate situation. “People are busy discussing the Pulwama attack, but what about our children who are affected by the increasing pollution,” he said.  He also criticised the MPCB for being a paper tiger. “The MPCB collects Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 crores from industries, but does nothing.  It should be ashamed of itself and criminally prosecuted,” he added.

Aggarwal also said that staying in such a polluted environment can lead to health hazards. “Besides respiratory ailments, people suffer from hormone disruption, cancer, skin diseases and their cognitive abilities are impacted.  This has been established by studies world over. I think people should get together and file a class suit against the state government for putting their lives at risk,” he added.
