City students have now decided take the responsibly of keeping the city clean in their own hands. Around 110 students of SK Somaiya College at Vidyavihar will patrol the streets along with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police officials, stopping people from spitting or littering the streets as part of their anti-spatter campaign.
Students will start the first phase of the campaign from Tuesday, when they will create awareness in their own campus which consists of nearly 27,000 students. They would later spread the campaign to other parts of the city.
A group of five students will man the streets in central suburbs from this week. On catching errant citizens, they will talk to them and if they do not listen, the BMC authorities will penalise them.
Mihir Sharma, general secretary of the college and a third year student of Banking and Insurance, said, “Youngsters getting involved in a campaign carries a greater impact. People do not trust the government or the municipality anymore.”
As part of the initiative, the BMC will train students to talk to the citizens and stop them from littering. National youth award winner Subhas Dalvi, officer on duty, who is also the pioneer of the Vile Parle model and ‘’Adopt a neighbourhood’’ campaign, says that they will train students for a week in talking to people about cleanliness.
“We are teaching students how to talk to people on the streets by using correct body language and posture, so that they do not get unfazed when citizens talk rudely to them,” Dalvi said.
Students from SK Somaiya College will form the nucleus of the campaign. National Service Scheme (NSS) units from other colleges in the periphery will also be involved. “It will also create a civic sense and responsibility amongst the youngsters,” Dalvi added.
The campaign was inaugurated by Mayor Sunil Prabhu on Moday, as students took an oath not to litter or spit on the streets. As part of the campaign, they have also started an anti-plastic drive where they will not carrying plastic bags.
