‘Stink-free’ dump yard in Mumbai by 2013

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has called for global expression of interests for a scientifically developed ‘regional landfill site’, which should be ready by 2013 in Taloja. The site will provide scientific solution to the tonnes of garbage that Mumbai generates, and create products such as compost, bio-fuel and even electricity.

MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said that the last date for submitting the expressions is February 1, 2011. “Global experts in setting up and running such sites have already shown keen interest in setting up a first of its kind such site for MMR,” said Kawathkar. “On a landfill site, the garbage is scientifically segregated and then disposed. Use of chemicals and other material makes sure there is no odour on such sites.”

“MMRDA will provide land for the project, which has been acquired —  a 117-hectare plot in Taloja. The developer will spend Rs800 crore for setting up and maintaining the project for 25 years,” said MR Shah, principle advisor of the solid waste management cell, MMRDA. He added that MMRDA will provide the viability gap.
Under the project, developer will be using his work force as well as machinery. In return, he will be able to sell the waste material generated out of the dump as compost.

“Plastic, wooden materials and rock in the garbage can generate Pulp Refused Derived Fuel,” Shah said.
