Std X tries attempts suicide, says school asked her to score well or die

A 17-year-old class X girl from Nalasopara tried to end her life by consuming phenyl after her school supervisor allegedly scolded and humiliated her saying that if she was not bright, she should die. On Tuesday, the depressed girl locked herself in the bathroom before drinking the chemical.On Monday, US Ostwal English Academy High School had summoned the girl and her parents to discuss her grades. At the meeting, a supervisor allegedly subjected the student to humiliation and threatened to demote her to class IX."I was unable to concentrate on the exams owing to lengthy portions and back-to-back exams. As a result, I failed 3 papers," explained the girl, who was rushed to Vijaylakshmi Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit."After the scolding and torture, she did not eat anything. She locked herself in the bathroom and consumed phenyl. The school is pressuring students to such an extent that they are compelled to take extreme steps. They even humiliated me and demanded a letter from me stating that if my daughter fails to score good marks, the school will be allowed to hold her back from taking the SSC exams", said the girl's mother.Principal Geeta Kumar refuted the allegation against her staff. "We held a meeting for parents of the students who failed in the exams, but we never speak to students in such a manner or torture them." She added that they would speak to the girl's parents and decide further course of action.
