Speeding car hits 6 women on JVLR; 2 dead, 2 critical
All residents of Aarey Colony, the women who were on their way to their workplace at Seepz village were run over while crossing the JVLR.
Two women died on the spot after a speeding Indica knocked them as well as four others down around 7am on Tuesday on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) near the Seepz village bridge. Two of the four surviving women suffered multiple injuries on the head and body, and were in a critical condition.
The women, all residents of Aarey Colony, who were on their way to their workplace at Seepz village, ran across the JVLR while crossing it when a BEST bus parked on the road revved up its engine. Because the bus was blocking their view, they couldn’t see an approaching Indica speeding down the road. The police say the surprised driver couldn’t slow down the car in the nick of time and ran over all of them.
Two of them — Sangeeta Vaman, 18, and Rekha Vanade, 22 — died on the spot, while others — Sneha Santaram Wadekar, 43, Anupriya Rajprit 21, Manju Prabhakaran, 20, and Jayaragini Mani Prakash, 19 — were rushed to the hospital. Wadekar and Rajprit suffered critical injuries. The other two are out of danger.
Pravin Patil, deputy commissioner of police (zone-12), says driver Pravin Kanojia, a 25-year-old resident of Dahisar working for a travel agency, was taking two employees to their office in Powai at the time of the accident.
Kanojia has been booked under section 279, 304-A, 338 of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. “From the primary investigations, the police have found that Kanojia was not under the influence of alcohol, but they are waiting for medical reports to confirm this,” says senior inspector Uttam More of Aarey sub-police station.
