Skylight subways at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to be ready by month-end
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to replace the old roof of the subways with toughened glass to make them look visually appealing from the outside and brighter from the inside.
Spanking new subways with skylight roofs at all four exits of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will be ready by the end of this month. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to replace the old roof of the subways with toughened glass to make them look visually appealing from the outside and brighter from the inside.
"Three exits have already got their glass covers. Work on the subway at the exit leading to the station's platform is going on. It will take the next 15 to 20 days to make the fittings to this last exit," said Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, A ward.
The subways outside CSMT were built 17 years ago and had black fibre roofs. To keep with contemporary design and complement the heritage structures around the subway, the BMC decided to replace the fibre covers with glass.
Considering CSMT is also a popular tourist destination, the glass-covered subways will complement the selfie point created by BMC in front of its headquarters.
DNA had reported on October 26, 2017 that BMC has started the work of replacing the roof and that the civic body plans to complete the work by the end of March.
Kalpana Mate, a commuter, said, "Due to the glass covers, it feels like the subway is newly-made. It is giving it a modern look and the subway is brighter and more attractive."
