Angered by the death of their child, the relatives assaulted the on-duty resident doctors at Sion hospital on Wednesday. One of the doctors, who is physically challenged, has been admitted in the surgery ward with a fractured right hand.

Resident doctors at Nair and KEM hospitals have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Friday morning in support of Sion hospital doctors.

“Dr Vishnu was beaten up with chairs etc. The doctors who tried to intervene were also beaten up. The worst part is that the guards were mute spectators to the incident,” said Dr Manoj Agalawe, vice-president, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), Sion hospital.

“We have asked the administration to increase the number of guards, but this is serious. The guards not only allowed the relatives inside the doctor’s room, but also remained quiet when they assaulted the doctors and damaged hospital property.” Dr Pankaj Nalawade, MARD, said, “There has been repeated lapse in providing security to doctors. This is the ninth such incident this year. We keep voicing our concerns, but the corporation is not taking us seriously. We want police action against the culprits.”

Sadia Siddhique, a 10-month-old baby girl, was brought to the hospital four days back for lower respiratory tract infection. According to the doctors, she was recovering well and was shifted to general ward.

However, her condition deteriorated later and she was shifted to the paediatric intensive care unit. She succumbed to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
