'We have decided to down shutters till March 31 to demand a cut in the tax,' Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (Bombay) President RV Vidhani said.
The around 700 single screen film theatres in Maharashtra downed shutters today to demand reduction in entertainment tax levied by the state government.
"We have decided to down shutters till March 31 to demand a cut in the tax," Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (Bombay) President RV Vidhani said.
Over the last five years, around 400 single screen theatres in the state have closed down as they could not bear the financial burden posed by the tax, he said.
Earlier, there were 1080 such theatres and now their number has come down to around 700, he added.
States like Rajasthan have done away with this tax and we wonder why Maharashtra government is continuing with it, Vidhani said.
