In a bid to curb female foeticide in Pune district, the district collectorate has decided to install a device called ‘Silent Observer’ in sonography machines in 854 registered sonography centres in Pune district.

The ‘Silent Observer’, a device developed by Magnum Opus IT Consultancy, records all sonographies done in hospitals and clinics. The device provides accurate information about all sonography tests conducted at these centres.

The ‘Silent Observer’ devices, which received national awards, were successfully installed in sonography machines at 240 centres in Kolhapur district earlier this year, directly impacting the female ratio, which went up from 839 to 876.

Reporting of sex determination tests also rose from 10,000 to 14,000 per month during this period.

Pune district collector Chandrakant Dalvi told media persons in the city on Wednesday that a workshop for district officials was held at the Alpabachat Bhavan for effective implementation of Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994, which aims at preventing sex determination thereby preventing female foeticide.

The workshop was addressed by district civil surgeon Mahendra Nagare, Kolhapur district hospital resident medical officer CJ Shinde and Girish Lad, CEO of Magnum Opus IT Consultancy.  Dalvi said the devices would be deployed in Pune district after orientation of the officials.

Lad said his company would deploy the ‘Silent Observer 1’ device in Pune, which are more advanced than the devices installed in Kolhapur.
