After finding carcasses of seven calves in Dahisar river on Sunday, a citizens’ group has urged the authorities concerned to not only probe the incident but also take action against tabela or cattle shed owners. The group heads a fight for protection and rejuvenation of the river. It is alleged that the tabela owners also release cow dung directly into the river.

It was on Sunday afternoon that one of the volunteers of River March, a citizen-led initiative, saw the carcasses after a stench had enveloped the area. “We had just finished our citizens’ meeting when someone pointed out that there were some carcasses on the patch where the river crosses Western Express Highway near Borivli. This is the location where there are tabelas along the river,” said Gopal Jhaveri, member of River March.

According to Jhaveri, the members called the BMC disaster management cell, but they responded late in the evening, and that too when local MLA Manisha Chaudhari reached the site on Sunday. The carcasses were taken away on Monday afternoon.

Another member of River March claimed that the dumping was also against the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan mission.
