Instances of SSC question papers being leaked this year opened a can of worms with regard to the system in place. With the city having been witness to several instances of leaked question papers, cybersecurity experts feel that the system needs an overhaul.

In the current system of the question papers reaching their final destination, a large number of people are involved. Subsequently, the risk of leakage compounds with every step of the process. The advent of social media has made the practice easier and speedy. To cybersecurity experts, technology as the ultimate solution. Online delivery of question papers in encrypted files or adopting a document management system may help curb the malpractice, they feel.

"State board needs to use encrypted files or document management system for transmitting exam papers from paper setters to board and from the board to printers. This would avoid leaks. Police should also use their intelligence to trap these miscreants beforehand," said, Prashant Mali, a cyber lawyer.

Ritesh Bhatia, a cybercrime investigator, said, "It's a known fact that tracing the origin of a WhatsApp message is extremely difficult and hence many people use it to transmit messages. Thus the state board should implement the model code of conduct similar to the one adopted by the Election Commission which prohibits any person from carrying any kind of photo-taking devices such as cameras, smartphones, spy camera etc to their workplace."

Maharashtra Class Owner Association (MCOA), on the other hand, urges the board to make its security system foolproof at the school and board level first.
