A western zone school principal on condition of anonymity said, "There is utter confusion about the whole thing as such statements are being made by people holding responsible posts."
Schools in the western suburbs claim that education officials have instructed them to not fail students of Class 9 and show 100% results. However, officials say that no such statement was made but schools were advised to give remedial coaching to students who don't do well, build their confidence and conduct re-exams for them.
A western zone school principal on condition of anonymity said, "There is utter confusion about the whole thing as such statements are being made by people holding responsible posts."
Another principal, Sangeeta Srivastava, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vidyalaya and Junior College, Kandivli, said: "A meeting was held by the western zone education inspector with all R-ward principals. He said that schools should not fail Class 9 students deliberately and instead students who are poor performers should be given remedial coaching during holidays and their re-exam should be conducted by schools."
Nitin Bachhav, education inspector, western zone, said: "I have not said that don't fail Class 9 students. But instead help all of them so that their confidence level will increase and they will perform well in their Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in future. I have told the principals to hold few periods for Class 9 students so that they will come to know which students are weak in studies and how they they can be helped. I have instructed the schools to help good performers as well as poor performers of Class 9 by taking extra classes during holidays and give remedial coaching to students who are weak in studies."
Recently, the Nagpur region education department circular stated not to fail Class 9 students and instead give them remedial coaching.
